FMP Animatic

This is the Animatic version of my Final Major Project.

Magnify

ONe of the later additions to my film was to use a magnify effect to exaggerate detail into certain places of the film for either comic effect or design purposes. This is something that also works well with the animated model instructions in the backgrounds to give insight into the creative process.

Backgrounds

Rather than using another solid shape for the backgrounds of my film i used a texture with a gradient on it to give contrast to the smooth objects in each shot. I also used a colour channel effect to change the colours of the background for different sequences of my film. This helps structure the overall animation and break down each gag into its own colour, maintaining continuity for the viewer.

Depth

I placed this texture into my comps on a 3d plane to create the illusion of perspective. The texture also worked to help break up the solid greys on the floor.

Focus

Another method that i used to add depth to my film was to add a blur on the foreground and distant objects in each shot, this gives the illusion of focus and makes the shot seem deeper.

Shadows

One of the problems i encountered while making my film was that because of all the hard edges and solid shapes and colours it began to look a little flat. One of the things that i did to counter this was to add drop shadows onto some of the scenery and the animals, giving the illusion of depth.

Overlaying

I then went on to drop the animated segments of the puppet instructions into the backgrounds of my environments using an overlay so that they were not so distracting. This did two things for me, it allowed me to break up the solid colours of the frame a bit giving interesting compositions and also gives insight into the creative process of the film which contrasts with the animated animal puppets.

Exploded View

I cut out the different sections of the instructions in the same way that i did the photographs of my models, and then imported them into After Effects where i could do some exploded view style animations with them.

Graphic Elements

While i was constructing some of the scenery for my sequences it struck me that the patterns on the puppet assembley instructions had a really nice graphic quality to them and i would like to include this in my film somehow, so i began testing some ideas.

Adding Hue

Posted in FMP Process on May 19, 2012 by colonelgold

Because i printed my colours out in greyscale i was able to get an exaggerated texture on the models which otherwise would not have been picked up on camera when i photographed them, but this also meant i needed to re add the colour in digitally and so i did this by adding an adjustment layer with Hue/Saturation. With this i could easily play around with the settings to achieve the colour that i wanted. I had to consider the colours of the animals and how the contrasted the environments because my film has such a focus on design.
